The Chapel of St. George on Georgenberg, also known as St. Jöuri, is a Romanesque church from the 11th/12th century. It is located between Sargans and Lake Walen and is known for its energetic spots and the so-called headache hole.
St. Georgenberg or "St. Jöuri", as it is popularly called, rises as a hilly mountain from the Seeztal between Sargans and Lake Walen. Excavations prove the settlement of Georgenberg since the Bronze Age. In the pre-Christian imagination Georgenberg corresponds to an old ancestor mountain or hollow mountain in whose interior the deceased stay before they are born again into life, analogous to the plants in nature. Legends prove the cult mountain as ancestral residence and distinguish it as the holy mountain of the Sarganserland, on which processions took place and on which cult games were organized. On the highest point of St. Georgenberg is the small Romanesque church dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. It is one of the very few two-aisled churches in Switzerland. A flat-roofed room, in which Beguines are said to have lived from the 14th to the 16th century, is added. In the church we find interesting energetic conditions. What do you feel in the bank room between the columns? Stay in the door on the top step, this is the place of cleaning. Recharge yourself after the entrance or in front of the altar. The altar marks a special and extremely powerful place, which was already used as a place of worship in pre-Christian times. The back of the altar has a so-called "headache hole" with high energies. It was first mentioned in writing in the 17th century. In the visitation report from 1631, written by Caspar Sayn, Vicar General in Chur, it says: "Hinden in the altar is a hole in which many people hold their heads against headache".
