Have you ever heard of the ‘saviour of children’? Behringwerke and Biontech? Behringwerke oHG was founded in Marburg in 1904 with ten employees. The company grew rapidly and was renamed Behringwerke GmbH just 10 years later. And to this day, the promise of the successor company CSL Behring is: ‘Saving lives and improving quality of life’.
And it all goes back to Emil, Emil von Behring. Emil Behring, who grew up in West Prussia with 11 siblings, was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901 for his discovery of blood serum therapy, which was successfully used in the fight against diphtheria. In the same year, the controversial staff physician was ennobled and was henceforth a von Behring. He was addressed with the official title and form of address ‘Privy Councillor Professor Dr Emil von Behring Excellency’.
From 1895, Behring worked and researched as a full professor of hygiene and director of the Institute of Hygiene at the University of Marburg. Before Behring died in 1917, he planned his mausoleum himself and oversaw the start of its construction in a park on his own land.
Would you like to explore the Behring Mausoleum on foot? Then why not take Route 1 from our brochure Hiking Marburg.
