Der Wasserturm ist das Wahrzeichen Mannheims. Erbaut 1889 galt er als Herzstück der zentralen Trinkwasserversorgung war er bis zum Jahr 2000 in Betrieb.

Der Wasserturm erhebt sich an der höchsten Stelle des Friedrichsplatzes. Mit seinem Ensemble aus Turm, Garten, Wasserbecken und der angrenzenden Festhalle sowie der Kunsthalle gilt der Friedrichsplatz als eine der schönsten Jugendstilanlagen Deutschlands. Bei Anbruch der Dunkelheit sorgen die hell erleuchteten Wasserspiele für eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre.

Der Turm ist 60 Meter hoch, hat einen Durchmesser von 19 Metern und fasst 2.000 Kubikmeter Wasser. Das Dach bekrönt eine Statue der Amphitrite, der Gattin des Meeresgottes Poseidon. Auch der weitere Bildschmuck und die Figuren am kleinen und am großen Becken nehmen diese Thematik auf: Wasser ist Leben und – speziell für Mannheim – die Grundlage für Schifffahrt und Handel.

Jederzeit, besonders interessant am Abend, wenn die Wasserspiele beginnen:

Montag - Freitag, von 12:00 - 14:00 und von 16:00 - 23:00 Uhr

Samstag - Sonntag, von 11:00 - 23:00 Uhr
