Die Gedenkstätte Walhalla im Markt Donaustauf wurde von König Ludwig I. in Auftrag gegeben, um bedeutende Persönlichkeiten "teutscher Zunge“ zu ehren.

Benannt ist sie nach Walhall, der Halle der Gefallenen nach nordischer Mythologie. Tatsächlich werden in Walhalla jedoch Persönlichkeiten aus nahezu allen Berufsschichten geehrt. Neben Kriegsherren und Kaisern wie Otto I. finden sich auch Büsten oder Gedenktafeln von Julius Echter, Haydn, Schiller, Goethe, Martin Luther oder Sophie Scholl. Aktuell befinden sich 196 Büsten und Gedenktafeln in der Halle.

Jedermann kann bis heute eine zu ehrende Persönlichkeit frühestens 20 Jahre nach deren Tod zur Aufnahme in Walhalla vorschlagen. Über die Neuaufnahme entscheidet der bayerische Ministerrat.

Geheimtipp für die Frühaufsteher: Der Sonnenaufgang auf den Stufen der Walhalla ist ein unvergessliches Naturschauspiel.
