The Arc de Triomphe was built on the orders of Emperor Naopléon between 1806 and 1836. The arch was only completed 30 years after construction began. It is 50 metres high and 45 metres wide. On 11 November, the parade that is celebrated every year to mark the Armistice between France and Germany in 1918 culminates here, but wreath-laying ceremonies and tributes are also held here on other days of the year.
Since 1920, the tomb of the unknown soldier from the First World War has been located under the Arc de Triomphe. The eternal flame that burns here is a reminder of the fallen soldiers of the war.
