The stele was inaugurated in 2002 on the 750th anniversary of the birth of Konradin, the last legitimate male descendant of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. It is part of a Europe-wide project in which numerous Staufer stelae were erected at historically significant locations between 2000 and 2018. The Hohenstaufen occupies a special position among them: The stele erected here is the only one of its kind with a height of three meters, making it taller than all other stelae. The material is also exceptional, as it was made from Apulian Trani marble.
The monument was designed by sculptor Markus Wolf. Its characteristic octagonal shape is reminiscent of important buildings from the Staufer era. A golden band at the top symbolizes the imperial crown. Inscriptions and coats of arms on several sides refer to central figures of the dynasty, including Frederick Barbarossa, Henry VI, Philip of Swabia, Frederick II and Conradin.
The stele stands in the immediate vicinity of the remains of the former Hohenstaufen Castle, which was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525. Together with the remains of the wall and the sweeping view over the surrounding countryside, this is an impressive place of remembrance where history, landscape and myth are closely linked.
