Seit 2001 Weltkulturerbe ist das Stift Göttweig heute Anziehungspunkt für Gäste aus aller Welt und spirituelles Zentrum im Herzen Niederösterreichs.
Stift Göttweig wurde 1083 gegründet, 1094 den Benediktinern übergeben und in seiner heutigen, barock ausladenden Gestalt Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts nach Plänen von J.-L. von Hildebrandts neu erbaut.
Im Museum im Kaisertrakt erlebt der Besucher die barocke Pracht, wie z. B. die monumentale Kaiserstiege mit dem Deckenfresko Paul Trogers aus 1739, die zu den schönsten und größten barocken Treppenhäusern Europas zählt. In den angrenzenden Fürsten- und Kaiserzimmern zeigen die Kunstsammlungen des Stiftes jährliche Sonderausstellungen. Wie eine sakrale Burg wacht das „Österreichische Montecassino“ südlich von Krems über den Osteingang der Wachau.
