One of the most important Benedictine monasteries, it is located in Subiaco, in the metropolitan city of Rome
Of the thirteen monasteries founded by St. Benedict in the 6th century, the Monastery of St. Scholastica is probably the oldest and also the only one still in use. It is located not far from the Sanctuary of the Sacred Speco. After several name changes, it was eventually dedicated to St. Scholastica, the sister of St. Benedict.
The monastic complex consists of a series of buildings from different periods and in different styles, including three cloisters (the Renaissance, the Gothic and the Cosmatesque), the 12th-century bell tower and the church (renovated in the 18th century).
The Monastery of St. Scholastica housed one of the most active scriptoriums (according to the monastic rule of St. Benedict it mentions, among the various tasks of the monks, that of writing) and it was here, in 1465, that the first book printed in movable type was born.
