Es war einst das reichste Kloster im gesamten Vogtland. Das ehemalige Dominikanerinnenkloster in Cronschwitz war ein reines Adligenstift. Heute sind nur noch Überreste der Mauern zu sehen.
1238 wurde das Kloster gestiftet. Die erste Priorin stammt auch dem Hause der Herren von Straßberg. Jutta von Altenburg musste sich damals von ihrem Gemahl Heinrich IV scheiden lassen, da dieser in den Ritterorden eintrat. Die Freisprechung vom Ehegelübte wurde damals im Kloster Mildenfurth mit einer festlichen Zeremonie durchgeführt. Um Juttas Unterhalt zu sichern wurde das Cronschwitzer Kloster gegründet. 1251 übernahm sie die Leitung. Als Heinrich nach schwerer Krankheit starb, wurden seinen sterblichen Überreste in Cronschwitz beigesetzt. Damit wurde das Kloster zum Hauskloster der vogtländischen Adelslinie (Heinrichinger) und diente zudem als Unterkunft für die unverheirateten Töchter der Vögte und des vogtländischen Adels.
Das Nonnekloster wurde ursprünglich für den jungen Magdalenerinnenorden eingerichtet. Die Aufsicht und Leitung oblag aber dem Dominikanerorden. Die weltlichen Geschäfte und die Bewirtschaftung waren einem Vogt des Deutschen Orden unterstellt. 1246 stellte Papst Inozenz IV. einen Schutzbrief für das Kloster aus.
Nach den Bestimmungen das Magdalerinnenordens (Bettelorden) gingen sämtliche Besitztümer der adligen Witwen und Töchter bei Eintritt an das Kloster über. Damit erklärt sich der schnell wachsende Reichtum von Cronschwitz. Schnell nahmen die Besitztümer und Länderein ein stattliches Ausmaß an. Zahlreiche Vorwerke, Länderein und Waldstücke umfasste das Einzugsgebiet.
Wie viele geistliche Stätten, verlor auch das Kloster Cronschwitz während der Reformation schnell an Bedeutung und wirtschaftlichem Einfluss. Martin Luthers Schwager Hans von Bora wurde von 1542 bis 1544 als Klosterverwalter eingesetzt. Laurentinus Faber wurde erster protestantischer Prediger. Zahlreiche Nonnen verheirateten sich und verließen das Kloster. Andere blieben jedoch bis zu Ihrem Tode in Cronschwitz.
Heute befinden sich auf dem Gelände des Klosters zahlreiche Wohnhäuser. Das Gasthaus zum Klosterhof erinnert namentlich an das einstige geistige Zentrum der Region.
