Die Abtei von Roncesvalles wurde im 12. Jahrhundert, etwa 100 Jahre nach Auflösung des Salvator-Klosters am Ibañeta-Pass, erbaut und war mit seinem Pilgerhospiz von jeher eine wichtige Station des Jakobswegs. Hier können wir in der historischen Pilgerherberge Casa Itzandeiga aus dem 13. Jahrhundert im gotischen Stil übernachten. Das Informationsbüro für Pilger ist Die schöne gotische Abteikirche Colegiata de Santa María aus dem 13./14. ist von 8-20 Uhr geöffnet. Das älteste Gebäude der Abtei ist die Wallfahrtskapelle Capilla del Espíritu Santo, ein ehemaliges Beinhaus aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Einer Legende nach soll es von Karl dem Großen als Grab für den gefallenen Ritter Roland errichtet worden sein.
