Das 766 gegründete Benediktinierkloster Metten spielte eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Urbarmachung, Besiedlung uns Missionierung des Bayerischen Waldes.

Die stetige Bedeutung und Größe des Klosters belegen umfangreiche Baumaßnahmen in allen Epochen, zuletzt in der Barockzeit in den ersten dreißig Jahren des 18. Jhds. Das einheitliche spätbarocke Erscheinungsbild lässt v.a. im Inneren den gotischen Kernbau vergessen. Für den Hochaltar bemühte man Cosmas Damian Asam. Sehenswert ist besonders auch die Bibliothek mit reichen Stuckarbeiten als Sitz der Weisheit, die Stiftskirche und der Prälatengarten.
