In the aftermaths of the turmoil of the Reformation and the Thirty Years’ War, former Abbot Martin Dallmayr (1640-1690) achieved a comprehensive internal and external renewal. In 1691, the foundation stone for the baroque monastery complex was laid, and the construction of the church commenced in 1700 under the architect Giovanni Antonio Viscardi who planned the baroque building following the model of the royal monastery palace “El Escorial” near Madrid. Primarily responsible for the interior decorations were the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam. The imposing high altar, which incorporates the choir windows, is extraordinary. At the choir arch, angels lift a turquoise curtain to reveal the “sacred spectacle” of Christian salvation history.
The monastery was dissolved in 1803 in the wake of secularization and has since been used for various purposes.
