1074 durch Herzog Welf I gegründet, war das Kloster Rottenbuch über viele Jahrhunderte hinweg ein sehr bedeutsames Kloster. Besonders die Seelsorge lag den Augustinerchorherren am Herzen. Ab 1604 betrauten sie mitunter den Hohen Peißenberg. Bedeutsame Schüler gingen der Kosterschule hervor, wie zum Beispiel Rochus Dedler, dem Komponisten dem Oberammergauer Passionsspiel.
Noch heute stehen der ehemalige Maierhof, das Torgebäude, die Brauerei, die Apotheke und viele weitere Gebäude.
