Here lies a modern organic poultry farm, located in Vergomenos area, consisting of 3 facilities, among olive groves. It is one of the few organized animal production facilities currently operating in Kythera. Fatseas Farm exports certified organic eggs all over Greece. In the past, until the 1960s, Kythera had an autarkic economy, mainly barter based, where agricultural production provided the necessary goods for each family. The breeding of domestic animals was part of this traditional model of self-sufficiency and polyculture. Basically, each family in Kythera had some sheep and “zoules” (goats), a couple of pigs, a few hens and a few large animals (donkeys or mules or oxen). Generally, livestock farming in Kythera began to decline from the beginning of the 20th century after the first waves of migration.
