Der Große Bruch ist ein ehemaliges Abbaugebiet für Granit, der mittlerweile mit Wasser gefüllt ist.
Seit über 150 Jahren wird in Demitz-Thumitz rund um den Klosterberg der Naturstein Granit abgebaut. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde Granit als Baustoff immer beliebter. Kein Wunder, ist er doch vielseitig einsetzbar: als Material für den Straßenbau, für Tür- und Fenstergewände, für den Brückenbau oder als Füllmaterial in Form von Schotter.
Die Oberlausitz und besonders die Gegend um Demitz-Thumitz ist reich an Granit. Deshalb konnte am Klosterberg das zeitweise größte und bedeutendste Abbaugebiet für Granit in ganz Sachsen entstehen.
