Remains of Vasilous' watermill in the Tsakonas ravine. Water from the voutsi powered the wheel, grinding the crop. Kytherians preferred watermills for better flour.
Remains of Vasilous' watermill in the Tsakonas ravine. Through the mill-race (or water-race) above, water filled the "voutsi" (large tank water tower) and, from there, exited from a small hole at the bottom at high speed to power the wheel. The wheel transmitted motion to the vertical shaft, which was wooden or metal, and this in turn, moved the upper millstone, while the lower one remained stationary. This is where the crop was ground. Kytherians preferred to grind their cereals in watermills rather than windmills as they believed the flour was better.
