Um 1817 wurde sie umgesetzt an den Schnittpunkt Mittelstraße-Rittergutwirtschaftsweg, der jetzigen Birkmühlstraße. Dieses Grundstück wurde aus dem Grundbesitz des Rittergutes erkauft und gleichzeitig das Wohnhaus als Freihaus erbaut.
Den Namen Birkmühle erhielt sie wegen einer unterhalb des Grundstückes stehenden Birke. Neben dem Mühlbetrieb wurde auch bis 1953 eine Bäckerei im Mühlenwohnhaus betrieben.
Im Jahre 1856 erhielt Karl Ernst Rönsch die Realkonzession zum Gasthausbetrieb im Mühlenwohnhaus. Der Mühlenbetrieb erfolgte bis 1956 mit Hilfe der Windkraft, obwohl ein vollständiger elektrischer Antrieb schon 1946 vorhanden war. Dieser wurde durch den letzten Windmüllermeister von Oderwitz, Ehrenfried Rönsch, bis 1974 gewerblich genutzt.
