The tower and hiking lodge were built in 1913 for the 25th anniversary on the then still forest-free summit of the Roßberg.
Together with the Roßfeld, the Roßberg forms the most advanced mountain flank of the Alb.
From the viewing platform of the observation tower, the view opens up in two directions: To the north-east, first to Pfullinger Berg with Gielsberg, then to Wanne and Schönberg, on to Urselberg and finally as far as Achalm, Teck and, in the far distance, Hohenstaufen. To the southwest lies the Filsenberg with the Meisenbühl in the immediate vicinity, above it the Farrenberg in front, to the left of it the Hirschkopf with its huge landslide, then the Dreifürstenstein - followed by Hohenzollern with Raichberg - and as the last mountain backdrop Lochenhörnle and -stein, as well as Schafberg and Plettenberg.
The sweeping views of the Alb foreland are impressive. At the foot of the mountain are Reutlingen and Pfullingen to the north-east, Tübingen with the satellite settlements on the Waldhäuser Höhe to the north, and Mössingen to the west. To the south, Steinhilben seems to rise up to the clouds on a wave of the undulating highlands. On a clear day, a large section of the Alpine chain can be seen in the distance. The sunset or the morning atmosphere from the tower are wonderful experiences. At night, you can look out over a sea of lights.
There is often a strong wind on the tower. Windproof and warm clothing is therefore also required in spring and fall - even when the sun is shining.
The tower is part of the Roßberg hiking lodge. You can even spend the night in it. There are guest rooms in the tower - one on each floor.
