To improve the lookout opportunities and aerial surveillance at Reposaari, an observation tower was built at the fortress in 1936 in accordance with the contemporary technical drawings. During the Winter War, the port of Mäntyluoto faced bombings almost every day, which kept the female civil defence workers known as “Lottas” and the young boys manning the tower busy.
The current lookout tower was built where the war-time observation tower once stood during the restoration work of 1992. Unlike the original tower, the new structure was equipped with a winding staircase and railings on the top platform, purely for safety reasons. The new tower was built with pressure-impregnated timber. In 2007, the top platform was renewed and the staircase renovated.
The reformed tower extends 12 metres above the ground and 17 metres above sea level. On a clear day, the tower offers a visibility of up to 22 kilometres. For example, the distance to the island of Säppi, which you can see on the south-southwest side, is 15 kilometres.
