In 1888, the most significant landmark of the island, the lighthouse, was built on the highest hill of Hiddensee, the Schluckswiekberg.

Im Norden der Insel, auf dem Schluckswiek im so genannten Hochland von Hiddensee, steht das Wahrzeichen der Insel, der Hiddenseer Leuchtturm. 102 Stufen führen in den seit 1994 für Besucher offenen Turm. Damit es dort oben nicht zu eng wird, können jedoch nur 15 Besucher gleichzeitig den Turm besteigen. Ab Windstärke 6 bleibt der Turm aus Sicherheitsgründen geschlossen.
