The keep - called "Dicker Heinrich" by the people of Zschopau - is one of the oldest parts of Wildeck Castle and offers a fascinating view over the Zschopau valley.
In the Middle Ages, Fat Henry guarded the ford across the Zschopau. The long-distance salt trade and clothmaking in particular benefited from his protection.
At 44 m high, it towers over all the roofs of the motorcycle town of Zschopau. There are 144 steps to the top, and numerous jackdaws and kestrels appreciate it and the castle as a nesting place.
To the roof of the Fat Henry:
From 1545, the Fat Henry wore a Renaissance hood. The upper slender part of the Renaissance dome was later removed. The lower part remained until 1844, when a flat conical roof was added. The current crowning was created in 1975/76 according to a design by Dr. Laudeley from Karl-Marx-Stadt as a reminiscence of the Middle Ages. However, this is pure invention, as the tower certainly never looked like this in the past. The main aim was to have a beautiful viewing tower.
