Das Wahrzeichen im Herzen der Stadt entstand als Forschungsneubau für den VEB Carl Zeiss Jena nach den Plänen des DDR-Star-Architekten Hermann Henselmann in der zylindrischen Bauweise eines Okulars.
Das unverkennbare Wahrzeichen der Lichtstadt Jena ist schon aus der Ferne gut sichtbar. Das Gebäude wird nicht nur als Bürogebäude genutzt. In einer der oberen Etagen befinden sich ein Hotel und ein Restaurant sowie die Aussichtsplattform für alle schwindelfreien Besucher Jenas.
Mit 159 Metern Höhe gilt er zugleich als der höchste Turm der neuen Bundesländer. Die Aussichtsplattform ist täglich geöffnet und bietet in 128 m Höhe einen geradezu überwältigenden Ausblick auf die Lichtstadt.
