Eine erste, aber bestrittene Nennung stammt aus dem Jahr 874 als "Widerolfeshusun". Nachdem es 1432 zu Hessen gekommen war, wurde es 1553 als "Wittershausen" bzw. 1564 als "Weideroldeshausen" genannt.
