Thüringer Stadt an der mittleren Werra beim Hainich

Treffurt wurde 1104 erstmals in einer Urkunde des Erzbischofs Ruthard von Mainz erwähnt. Darin wurde festgehalten, dass der Bischof in der "Zelle“ (Probstei Zella) bei Falken einen Altar weihte, wobei ihn der Ritter Pilgrim de Trifurte als Zeuge begleitete.

Durch die Lage an der Kreuzung zweier Handelsstraßen erlangte Treffurt im Mittelalter regionale Bedeutung. Zur Kontrolle der Werrafurt wurde wahrscheinlich schon im 9. Jahrhundert ein romanischer Burgbau über dem Werratal errichtet, zunächst der Rundturm als Warte mit Schutzmauern. Um 1200 wurde die Warte zur Wohnburg der Herren von Treffurt ausgebaut und später um die Vorburg erweitert. Die Treffurter Ritter verwalteten die Stadt Treffurt und die umliegenden Dörfer im Auftrag des Thüringer Landgrafen in Eisenach. 1336 wurden sie als Raubritter von der Burg vertrieben und Treffurt wurde über Jahrhunderte eine Ganerbschaft im Besitz von Kursachsen, Kurmainz und Hessen-Kassel, bis im 18. Jahrhundert Kurmainz die Landeshoheitsrechte der Ganerbschaft Treffurt allein übernahm. Die Amtsleute der dreigeteilten Herrschaft bewohnten zunächst die Burg, verließen sie aber im ausgehenden Mittelalter und verwalteten die Besitzungen vom Hessischen, Sächsischen und Mainzer Hof in Treffurt aus. Die funktionslos gewordene Burg verfiel und wurde zum Steinbruch für die Bauten der Treffurter Bürger. Ende des 19. Jh. wurde die Burgruine privat gekauft und in einem neuen Gebäude eine Herberge und Gaststätte eingerichtet. 1971 wurde die Gasstätte aufgegeben, 1975 zog der Jugendclub der Stadt Treffurt ein, wodurch der weitere Verfall etwas aufgehalten wurde. Nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung wurde die Burg zwischen 1996 und 2006 umfassend saniert und beherbergt jetzt ein städtisches Museum über die Geschichte der Burgen im Werratal. 2008 wurde wieder eine Gaststätte eröffnet.

Treffurt entwickelte sich im Mittelalter schnell zum bedeutenden regionalen Handelsplatz. 1333 wurde dem Ort das Stadtrecht verliehen. 1532 erhielt Treffurt durch Kaiser Karl V. das Recht, „einen Wochenmarkt auf jeden Sonnabend und zwey Jahrmärkte auf St. Georgi und St. Simon abzuhalten“.

Im 19. Jh. ging Treffurt an Preußen über und gehörte dadurch ab 1945 zum Land Thüringen. Im Grenzgebiet der DDR zu Hessen gelegen (die Grenze bei Heldra war nur 2 km entfernt), war Treffurt isoliert und nur mit Passierschein zu erreichen.

Die historische Treffurter Innenstadt ist geprägt von etwa 250 Fachwerkhäusern im hessisch-thüringischen Baustil. Der Besucher kann schöne Balkenschnitzereien sehen und interessante Stilelemente des Fachwerks, wie das Sonnenrad oder den Wilden Mann. Dominierend ist das Rathaus aus dem Jahr 1549 am Markt, das zu den schönsten Fachwerkgebäuden Thüringens gehört. Aber auch das Ohrfeigenhaus, die Grafschaft, das Falkenstein Gefangenenhaus, Rink's Haus oder das Haus Kirchstraße 31 (ältestes erhaltenes Haus aus dem Jahr 1546) zeigen dem Betrachter in anschaulicher Weise die handwerkliche Kunst vergangener Zeiten. Auffallend sind auch die vielen Toreinfahrten in der Hessischen Straße, die auf die Landwirtschaft als Haupterwerb der Bewohner hinweisen.
