The town was founded in 1522, received its town charter in 1530 and a few years later was granted mining freedom with its own mining office. The chronicler and pastor Christian Lehmann (1611 -1688) lived here. He led the town through the turmoil of the 30 Years' War. The silver mining industry, which was so promising at the beginning, experienced a major decline as early as 1543. The mines were completely abandoned in 1566. The town's landmark is the 807 m high Scheibenberg with its newly erected 28 m high observation tower. The 40 m high basalt columns, also known as organ pipes, can be seen from afar and are a natural geological monument and a particular tourist attraction. The Bergknapp- und Brüderschaft Oberscheibe/Scheibenberg e. V. ensures the preservation of mining traditions
