Der Ort zwischen Verdun und Metz lag an der „Grande Route Imperiale“, dem Abschnitt der VIA REGIA, den Napoleon im 19. Jahrhundert zwischen Paris und Mainz anlegen ließ.

Mars-la-Tour befand sich geographisch an einer strategisch wichtigen Position. Im August 1870 fanden hier im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg zwei wichtige Schlachten statt. Von 1871 bis 1919 war Mars-la-Tour Grenzort zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich. Ein Grenzstein des Deutschen Reiches steht vor dem ehemaligen Militärmuseum.

Im September 1944 tobten hier während des Kampfes um Metz schwere Gefechte zwischen der 3. US-Armee unter dem Befehl von Generalleutnant George S. Patton und der 462. Ausbildungsdivision des deutschen Generals Walther Krause.

Die Pfarrkirche Sankt Martin beherbergt eine Gedächtniskapelle an die Schlachten. Ein Erinnerungspfad mit 4 Stationen (Foto) fängt in Mars-la-Tours an und leitet die Besucher (nach Voranmeldung) durch die ehemaligen Schlachtfelder.

Sehenswert ist auch die Burganlage. Sie wurde erstmals 1192 erwähnt und war später Sitz der Familie Ficquelmont. Die heutige Anlage umfasst nur noch zwei Türme und das Verbindungsgebäude zwischen diesen Türmen.

Keine Zugverbindung. Der nächste Bahnhof liegt in Jarny (ungefähr 7 km entfernt).

Radwanderer folgen die Regionalstraße RD 903.

Der Autofahrer fährt entweder über die A4 (Paris-Metz), Ausfahrt Fresnes-en-Woëvre (mautpflichtig) oder über die Regionalstraße RD 903 von Verdun (40 km) nach Metz (30 km).

Parking

Stellplätze für Wohnmobile sind in der Stadt nicht vorhanden. Nächste Stellplätze in Verdun (40 km westlich) und in Metz (30 km östlich).
