Erste Siedler waren in der mittleren Steinzeit angesiedelt.
Am 23.01.1248 wurde durch den Markgrafen Johann von Brandenburg (1226 - 1267) die Stadt Lychen gegründet. In der Gründungsurkunde von 1248 erhielt die Stadt u. a. das Recht der eigenen Gerichtsbarkeit und der eigenen Münzstätte.
Von wesentlicher Bedeutung für die Entwicklung Lychens wurde die verkehrstechnische Erschließung:
- Bau der Chaussee Lychen - Templin 1891
- Eröffnung der Eisenbahnlinie Templin - Fürstenberg 1899 und die
- Errichtung der Heilstätten des roten Kreuzes 1903 bis 1914 in Hohenlychen
Diese Tatsachen führten zur Umwandlung Lychens von einem Ackerbürger-/Handwerkerstädtchen zu einem Naherholugsort.
