Flöha is a large district town in the district of Central Saxony with approx. 11036 inhabitants (as of 2014). It borders directly on the industrial city of Chemnitz. The river Flöha, which gave the town its name, crosses the town together with the river Zschopau. Both rivers merge on the outskirts of the town.
The first documented mention of Flöha comes from a court record dated March 25, 1399, in which a priest named Johan and Flöha is referred to as "zcu der flaw". Excavations in 2006 in the choir of the late Gothic Georgenkirche church revealed a large area of late Romanesque foundations, which point to a late Romanesque church from the period between 1150 and 1250, almost certainly a choir tower church. This proves that Flöha was settled after 1150. As the church village of Flöha also mentions the villages of Gückelsberg in the north and Plaue in the south of the valley basin, it is also considered correct that these villages were settled after 1150. It is also certain that the Schellenbergers played a decisive role in the founding of our settlements.
