Der Name Fleeth geht auf das altslawische Wort vil, vila zurück und bedeutet Zauberer, Zauberin. Der Ort des Vil entwickelte sich über die Schreibweisen Vilet im Jahr 1270 über Vlete im Jahr 1664 zum heutigen Fleeth.
Die Fleether Gegend war bereits vor über 3000 Jahren in der Bronze- und Eisenzeit besiedelt. Die germanischen Stämme verließen zur Zeit der Völkerwanderung das heutige Mecklenburg und etwa ab dem Jahr 600 nahmen slawische Stämme das herrenlose Land in Besitz.
