Kleinstadt an der mittleren Werra in Westthüringen an der Grenze zu Hessen: historische Innenstand, geschichtsträchtiger Lutherort, sehenswerte Fachwerkhäuser

Die Stadt Berka/Werra liegt im Berkaer Becken im mittleren Werratal in Westthüringen. Während Berka ans östliche Werraufer reicht, beginnt gleich hinter den westlichen Werraauen das Land Hessen (Wildeck-Obersuhl).

Berka wurde als alter Ort Berchao schon Anfang des 9. Jh. als Schenkung an das Kloster Hersfeld genannt. Im 13. Jh. wurde der Marktflecken an der Handelsstraße "Kurze Hesse" Verwaltungssitz der Hersfelder in dieser Vogtei. Ab 1354 residierte der hersfeldische Vogt im Amtshaus, das später Apotheke wurde und jetzt als Storchenbäckerei bekannt ist. In diese Zeit fällt auch die Befestigung mit 3 Stadttoren und Kirchenburg. Erhalten ist noch das Untertor. Der markante Turm der mittelalterlichen Kirche St. Laurentius mit den 4 Ecktürmchen (Fünfknopfturm) wurde 1439 errichtet, das Kirchenschiff wurde 1616 neu erbaut, das Kreuzgewölbe des Chors stammt noch aus dem 15. Jh. Die Mauern und anderen Türme der ehemaligen Kirchenburg wurden im 19. Jh. abgetragen, um die Straßenführung zu verbessern.

Berka spielte in der Reformation eine Rolle, 1521 rastete Martin Luther in Berkas ältestem Gasthaus "Zum Stern", Berka war damals der einzige Rastort zwischen Hersfeld und Eisenach. Philipp I. von Hessen besetzte Berka während der Bauernkriege, den Bauernführer Jakob Töpfer ließ er in Eisenach hinrichten und setzte 1527 die Reformation durch. Im 30jährigen Krieg wurde Berka niedergebrannt, fast die ganze Bevölkerung starb bis Mitte des 17. Jh. durch Hunger, Krieg und Pest.
Erst 1667 konnte das Rathaus wieder aufgebaut werden. Seit etwa 1700 nahm der Handelsverkehr zu und der Handelsort erholt sich, die Postfürsten Thurn und Taxis richteten die erste Poststation Westthüringens in Berka ein. Im 18. Jh. kam Berka durch Gebietsaustausch zum Herzogtum Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, es wurde 1816 als mit allen städtischen Rechten ausgestatteter Marktflecken beschrieben, das Stadtrecht bekam es aber erst 1847. Mitte des 18. Jh. wurde der Amtssitz in das alte Gasthaus "Zum Stern" verlegt und als Gasthaus wurde "Der goldene Stern" 1764 eröffnet. Zwischen 1806 und 1813 rastete der französische Kaiser Napoleon mehrfach in Berka, 1813 soll er während der Flucht im Gasthaus "Zur Post" (früher, im 16. Jh. "Zum goldenen Adler") zu Mittag gegessen haben.

Anfang des 20. Jh. wurde die Brauerei als erster Industriebetrieb gebaut, es wurde ein Kalischacht abgeteuft und die Bahnlinie gebaut, um die wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten der ländlichen Gegend zu verbessern. Zum Ende des 2. Weltkriegs wurde die Werrabrücke gesprengt. Während der DDR-Zeit lag Berka/Werra in der Sperrzone des Grenzgebietes, entwickelte sich aber wirtschaftlich und kulturell. Seit Grenzöffnung und deutscher Einheit liegt Berka/Werra verkehrsgünstig im Zentrum Deutschlands und soll sich als Dienstleistungsort entwickeln.

Am südwestlichen Ortsende von Berka liegt hinter dem Werrawehr das Freizeitcamp und Kanu-Verleih Werra, am gegenüber liegenden östlichen Ortsende gibt es ein Freibad mit 50-m-Becken mit Sprungturm, Nichtschwimmer- und Kinderplanschbecken, Liegewiese ind Imbiss.
