The lighthouse is located on the rocky island of South Stack off Holy Island, which lies to the west of Anglesey, Wales' largest island, in the north of Wales.
The lighthouse was built in 1809 to warn ships of the dangerous rocks on the cliff. As early as 1665, an attempt was made to obtain permission for a lighthouse on this site, but it failed. Building the lighthouse on the rocks was a technically demanding and dangerous undertaking. Goods and later workers were transported to the island by cable car, and a connecting bridge was not built until 1828. Today's bridge dates from 1997, and the South Stack lighthouse has been remote-controlled since 1983. There is a visitor centre and guided tours are also offered. If you want to explore the lighthouse on your own, you can pick up a guide booklet that provides information about the lighthouse and its history. From the lighthouse, you have a great view of the surrounding area: the Wicklow Mountains, the Llŷn Peninsula and Skerries Lighthouse can be seen and, on a clear day, even Mount Snowdon can be seen in the distance.
