Sídelná budova SNK je 42 metrov vysoká a 110 dlhá, má 14 podlaží a 10 000 štvorcových metrov plochy. Postavená bola technológiou zdvíhaných stropov a je obložená betónovými fasádnymi obkladmi.
Vo svojej sídelnej budove poskytuje SNK od roku 2000 (odlúčenie SNK od Matice slovenskej na základe knižničného zákona) všetky typy knižnično - informačných služieb pre domácich i zahraničných používateľov. Vo svojich útrobách uchováva viac ako 5,2 milióna knižničných jednotiek v rôzneho typu. Primárnym cieľom SNK je dopĺňať, odborne evidovať, spracovávať uchovávať, ochraňovať a sprístupňovať knižničný fond s osobitným dôrazom na slovaciká.
