Ansião’s Town Library has been part of the National Network of Public Libraries since 1987. Once the old town market, commissioned by the Town Council in 1938 and designed by the Superior Technical Institute of Lisbon, it opened as a library in August 1992, after the building was restored.
Three centres (polos) have been operating since 1997 under the Town Library’s management, which is also responsible for documents and archives, as well as creating animation activities:- Polo of Santiago da Guarda in a local association (“Centro de Amizade e de Animação de Santiago da Guarda”);- Polo of Avelar, in the building of the Parish Council;- Polo of Chão de Couce, in the building of the Parish Council. From traditional book loan services to the latest technologies, many are the cultural services provided by the Town Library, both at the main building and at its three centres. In 2004 the working conditions in this library improved, after it was remodelled. In 2017, one of the rooms was named after Ansião’s writer and poet, Políbio Gomes dos Santos, receiving part of his estate and, therefore, becoming a space in his honour. This collection includes the author´s manuscripts, his mail, press clipping and biographical documents. It also contains several editions of his works and autographed works of the poets of his generation, with whom he shared his thoughts: Fernando Namora, Miguel Torga, Joaquim Namorado, Vitorino Nemésio, among others.
