Der Wohlensee
liegt im Konfliktbereich zwischen Erholungs- und Schutzgebiet. Nicht einfach ist es, die Erwartungen der Camper, Fischer, Radfahrer, Ruderer, Wanderer, der Natur- und Vogelschützer, der Seeanstösser sowie der Vertreter der Landwirtschaft und der Bernischen Kraftwerke AG unter einen Hut zu bringen. Weil am Wohlensee nur drei Zonen als eigentliche Naturschutzgebiete ausgeschieden sind, gilt dem Schilfschutz die besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Möglichst zusammenhängende Schilfbänke bieten Lebensraum für unzählige Wasserbewohner. So können heute Biberspuren, Eisvögel, Watvögel, Blind schleichen, Ringelnattern und verschiedene seltene Amphibien am Wohlensee beobachtet werden. Übermächtig ist die Population der rund 250 ansässigen Schwäne, unter denen sich auch ein «Schwans-Paar» (Höckerschwan+Graugans) befindet: eine echte Rarität.
Ursprünglich hätte der Wohlensee «Elektrosee» genannt werden sollen. Es kam zum Glück anders. Innert weniger Jahrzehnte verwandelte sich die aufgestaute Aare in ein Naturparadies von nationaler Bedeutung. Der etwa 12 km lange, maximal 700 m breite See erinnert eher an einen nordischen Fjord als an einen künstlich geschaffenen Stausee. Der stete Wechsel von naturnahen Flussufern, einsamen Buchten, Auenwäldern und langgezogenen Schilfflächen übt denn auch auf etliche Ausflügler grosse Anziehungskraft aus. Zahlreiche Wasservögel, Amphibien und Insekten, aber auch Biber und Fledermäuse finden hier Lebensraum.
