Der Wittensee ist ein eiszeitlicher Endmoränensee. Er läd zum Baden, Surfen und Segeln ein.
Die Entstehung des Sees und der umliegenden Region wurde stark von der Weichseleiszeit (Ende der Weichseleiszeit vor ca. 12.000 Jahren) geprägt. Der Wittensee hat eine Fläche von ca. 10 km² und eine maximale Tiefe von ca. 20 Metern. Die Größe des Sees wird besonders gerne von Seglern und Surfern genutzt. Zudem ist der Wittensee ein beliebtes Angel- und Badegebiet. Es gibt diverse Badestellen am Wittensee. In unmittelbarer Nähe des Startpunktes in Groß Wittensee befindet sich eine der Badestellen.
