Der Vorsee liegt im Naturschutzgebiet Vorsee-Wegenried auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Wolpertswende im Landkreis Ravensburg und ist Teil der Blitzenreuter Seenplatte.

Der Vorsee entstand nach der letzten Eiszeit (Würm) vor ca. 12.000 Jahren. Er ist ein Eisrandstausee und bildete sich zwischen zwei Endmoränewällen und den abschmelzenden Eismassen unter dem Einfluss des Schmelzwassers. Durch mehrmalige Absenkung des Wasserspiegels und der zunehmenden Verlandung verkleinerte sich der Vorsee auf eine Wassertiefe von 2m und einer Wasserfläche von ca. 8ha.
