Der Vilsalpsee liegt auf rund 1200 m unterhalb von Gaishorn und Rauhorn inmitten der Tannheimer Berge.
Genusswanderer können den See auf einem leichten Rundweg erkunden, für sportlichere Wanderer und Bergsteiger ist der See willkommenes Ziel nach einer längeren Tour. Seit den späten 1950er Jahren liegt der Vilsalpsee im Naturschutzgebiet, das viele seltene Tier- und Pflanzenarten beheimatet.
