Der Stausee ist nach mehreren Überschwämmungen in Triptis im Jahr 1980 eingeweiht worden.
Aufgrund des ziemlich großen Einzugsgebietes der Orla kam es in der Vergangenheit immer wieder zu Überschwemmungen der Stadt Triptis. Das letzte Hochwasser war im Sommer 1975. Daraufhin erfolgte in den Jahren von 1977-1980 der Bau der Talsperre Triptis, die gleichzeitig ein Naherholungsgebiet darstellt. Die Talsperre dient heute dem Hochwasserschutz und in geringem Maße der Niedrigwasseraufhöhung, früher auch der Brauchwasserversorgung für Triptiser Betriebe. Betreiber der Talsperre ist die Thüringer Fernwasserversorgung und gepachtet und bewirtschaftet wird die Talsperre vom Anglerverein Triptis und Umgebung e. V. Die Wasseroberfläche der Talsperre umfasst etwa 14 ha und sie hat einen Speicherraum von 0,49 Mio. m³. Auf und um die Talsperre leben mittlerweile wilde Schwäne, Enten und Bleßhühner. Der auf der Dammkrone angelegte Fußweg verlief anfangs um die gesamte Talsperre, heute führt der Weg auf der Nordseite der Talsperre nur noch bis zum Vorstau. Allerdings hat sich die Natur um die Talsperre in den letzten Jahren zu einem wahren Biotop entwickelt.
