Der Spitzingsee liegt etwa fünf Kilometer südlich des Schliersees bzw. wenige hundert Meter südlich des Spitzingsattels auf 1.084 m Höhe. Mit 28,3 Hektar Fläche ist er der größte Hochgebirgssee Bayerns. Die Seetiefe beträgt maximal 16,30 Meter (Südbecken). Das Nordbecken ist bis zu 10,40 Meter tief.
