The water reservoir in the Mardale valley is today one of the biggest lakes in the National Park Lake District.

The public reaction to the built of the reservoir was very critical as farming settlements in the villages Measand and Mardale Green fell victim to the plans of the Parliament. The villagers moved and the dam was built in 1929.

When the water level of the Haweswater reservoir is low, the ruins of the villages reappear.

For outdoor enthusiasts, a trip to Haweswater includes views of this beautiful lake and exciting paths leading through the area.
