Der Talboden des Etschtales von Meran bis nach Salurn war einst bedeckt mit Auwäldern und Sümpfen, die gegelmäßigen Frühjahrshochwasser der Etsch zwangen die Menchen auf die Schwemmkegel und Hänge am Talrand. Ende des 19. Jhdt. wurden großräumige Flussregulierungsarbeiten in Angriff genommen, in der Hoffnung die Gewalt die Kraft der Etsch entgültig zu bändigen. Aus dem einstmals wilden und wasserreichen Fluss wurde an vielen Stellen ein gut gesicherter Kanal. Ganz konnten die Naturgewalten nicht gebändigt werden, trotzdem wurden mit diesen Bauten die Grundlage für die Landwirtschaft im Talboden gelegt.
