Der Große Alpsee ist über drei Kilometer lang und an seiner tiefsten Stelle knapp 23 Meter tief. Die Entstehungsgeschichte des Sees reicht etwa 10.000 Jahre bis zum Ende der letzten Eiszeit zurück. Als sich damals der Illergletscher aus dem Konstanzer Tal zurückzog, ließ er ein tief ausgeschürftes, weites Trogtal zurück. Die Schmelzwässer des zurückweichenden Eises füllten den Talboden fast 100 Meter hoch mit Schottern auf. Da aber an der Stelle des heutigen Alpsees eine große Eismasse liegen blieb (Toteis), wurde dieser Bereich damals nicht mit Schottern zugeschüttet.
