Der Borgwallsee hat eine Länge von rund 3,6 km, eine Breite von 1,8 km und eine durchschnittliche Tiefe von etwa 2,4 m. Wie alle vorpommerschen Seen ist der Borgwallsee in der letzten Eiszeit entstanden. Das Seeufer im Süden ist bewaldet, die anderen Uferseiten werden landwirtschaftlich genutzt.
Der See gehört zum Naturschutzgebiet Borgwallsee und Püttersee und ist das Trinkwasserreservoir der Stadt Stralsund, weshalb der See nicht mit Booten befahren werden darf und das Baden nur an ausgewählten Stellen erlaubt ist.
