Seine Wanderungen zum heute bis zu 13 m Tiefe aufgestauten Bergsee hat schon Joseph Viktor von Scheffel in sein Werk "Der Trompeter von Säckingen" einfließen lassen. Ab den 70-Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich der Bergsee zu einem beliebten Ausflugsziel. Der Uhrmacher Constantin Maier eröffnete im Jahr 1873 die erste Gaststätte am Ufer des Naturidylls.
