From the end of May to around mid-July, the small lakes – in the centre of the Gemmi Pass mountain world and surrounded by magnificent Swiss stone pines – are full of crystal-clear water.

The Arvenseeli are three deep blue mountain lakes above the Bernese municipality of Kandersteg. The lakes are located on the Sunnbüel plateau, a few hundred metres north of the Valais cantonal border at an altitude of 1888 metres above sea level. The Arveseeli offer crystal-clear, deep-blue water and lie in the midst of lush alpine pastures and mighty fir (or stone pine) trees.

The Arveseeli are fed by meltwater. Depending on the amount of snow, the lakes have water for a shorter or longer period in spring or early summer. From summer onwards, the Arvenseeli dry up. At the back of the lake is a beautiful and well-equipped fireplace with benches and firewood.

Hikes lead from the Sunnbüel mountain station to the Caribbean-like Arvenseeli in about half an hour.

Public transport

By train to Kandersteg and from there by bus to the Sunnbüel stop, the valley station is right there. Take the mountain railway up to the Sunnbüel mountain station.

Return journey: With the gondola back to the valley station, then again by bus and train Mountain

Hello, thank you for your informative article on The Arvenseeli. We're considering a visit in late August (wwe live in Australia and it is our winter then). How are the conditions this year? It seems that Late August may be TOO late to see Arvenseeli at its best or even when it has water. What do you think? Regards! John & Lyn
