Natürlicher Stausee
Wie eine Wiege liegt dieser mannigfaltige Moorkomplex in einer Mulde zwischen den Steilstufen hinab ins Ganifer und hinauf zur Versalspitze. Für die Entstehung waren mehrere Faktoren ausschlaggebend: die sattelförmige Geländeform, das Abschmelzen der Gletscher, ausreichend Niederschläge und der wasserstauende Untergrund. Der Wiegensee ist ein sehr anschauliches Beispiel für einen natürlichen Stausee, den ältesten im Montafon. So genannte Schwingrasen im Uferbereich sind ein Zeichen für seine beginnende Verlandung, die bei den Moorseen weiter östlich bereits fortgeschritten ist.
Da die Schwingrasen und Moorlebensräume äußerst empfindlich sind, dürfen die Wege am Wiegensee nicht verlassen werden. Auch das Baden im See führt zur Störung des sensiblen Ökosystems.
Hinweis: Im gesamten Gebiet gilt ein Wegegebot und Leinengebot für Hunde. Zum Schutz der sensiblen Ufervegetation ist das Baden im Wiegensee nicht erlaubt. Toiletten befinden sich bei der Bergstation Tafamunt sowie der Alpe Verbella.
