"Damit jedes Weizenkorn auf fruchtbaren Boden fällt, hat man in früheren Zeiten die groben Steine aus den Äckern gelesen und entlang der Flurstücksgrenze aufgehäuft. Die so entstandenen Steinriegel wurden durch den Prozeß der "Sukzession" begrünt. Nach den Gräsern, Kräutern und Stauden folgten Sträucher und junge Bäume.
Wurde die Schattenwirkung der großen Bäume auf die benachbarten Felder zu groß, setzte man die Hecke auf den Stock. Das heißt, dass bis auf wenige junge Bäume die komplette Hecke weggesägt wurde. Man wußte ja, daß neue Triebe die Hecke wieder wachsen lassen.
Neben der Brennholznutzung dienten die Hecken auch zum Sammeln von Früchten (Schlehe, Hagebutte, Himbeere ...) und der Gewinnung von Werkhölzern. Schuhnägel, Holzstiele, Knöpfe und Pfeifenköpfe wurden aus den harten, langsam wachsenden Sträuchern der Steinriegelhecken gefertigt." (Text der Infotafel)
