Markante Gipfel und Gesteinsrippen prägen die Bergkette des Nagelfluh am Hochgrat, die sich vom Mittagberg bei Immenstadt über den Hochgrat bis in den Bregenzer Wald erstreckt. Die aus Geröllen zu Konglomerat "verbackenen" Gesteine sehen aus, als hätte man Nägel tief in sie eingeschlagen, so dass nur noch die Köpfe herausschauen, weshalb man sie auch als "Nagelfluh" bezeichnet.
Mit dem Projekt "Bayerns schönste Geotope" des Landesamts für Umwelt (LfU) und des Umweltministeriums wurden 100 wichtige Geotope in Bayern der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Eines dieser 100 Geotope ist der Nagelfluh am Hochgrat. Alle Standorte, so auch der Nagelfluh am Hochgrat, sind mit Informationstafeln ausgestattet. Für jedes Geotop ist ein Faltblatt erhältlich.

Von der A7 Ulm-Füssen am Autobahndreieck Allgäu auf die A980 in Richtung Lindau/Oberstdorf wechseln. Am Autobahnende bei Waltenhofen die B19 Richtung Sonthofen/Oberstdorf nehmen und dieser 16 km bis zur Einmündung der B308 bei Immenstadt folgen. Dort auf die B308 Richtung Oberstaufen/Lindau abbiegen und auf dieser 18 km bis Oberstaufen. Am Ortseingang die B308 nach rechts verlassen, nach 300 m nach links auf die ST2005 und nach weiteren 200 m nach links in die Weißachstraße abbiegen. Von dieser nach 600 m nach links auf die ST2005/Mühlenstraße und dieser 1,1 km folgen. In Höfen nach links auf die OA25, auf dieser ins Ortszentrum Steibis und weiter ca. 4 km zum Parkplatz Hochgratbahn. Mit Seilbahn oder zu Fuß über Untere und Obere Lauch-Alpe sowie das Staufner Haus zur Bergstation und zum Hochgrat-Gipfel (2 3/4 Std.)
