Göttliche Grenze

Ein gespaltener Stein als Gottesurteil? Immer wieder sollen sich die Montafoner mit den Unterengadinern um die Grenze zwischen ihrem Weideland gestritten haben. Das ungeschriebene Gesetz, wonach man Berggrenzen entlang von Bächen oder Bergkämmen zog, wollte wohl keiner akzeptieren. Der Besitz der Engadiner reichte weit über die Silvrettapässe in das Tal der Ill herab. Sie baten der Legende nach zur Bestätigung ihrer Besitzungen um den Beistand Gottes. Es kam zu einem Unwetter und ein Blitz spaltete den großen Stein, der fortan die Grenze gleich am Ortsende von Partenen markierte.

 

Gufelste, Partenen

Wie zieht man in den Bergen Grenzen? Am einfachsten entlang von Bächen oder entlang von Bergkämmen, dann gibt´s ein gut sichtbares Hier und Dort. In der Silvretta brauchte es aber, zumindest der Legende nach, durchaus mal Blitz und Donner und somit ein Gottesurteil, um die langwierigen Grenzstreitigkeiten zwischen den Leuten aus dem Unterengadin und den Leuten des Montafons zu klären. Die Unterengadiner waren schon im Mittelalter diesseits des Silvretta-Hauptkamms erschienen, um die Alpweiden zu nutzen. Die Leute von Guarda und Ardez waren sogar Eigentümer der Alpe Vallüla und von Weiden und Alpen im Großvermunt. Und Ansprüche erhoben die Ardezer sogar auf Gebiete bis ins Montafon hinab, bis nach Partenen. Beim sogenannten Gufelgut bei Partenen trafen der Legende nach nun die Ardezer und die Montafoner zusammen und begannen zu diskutierten und zu streiten. Die Montafoner bezeichneten die Engadiner bald als Lügner, die Engadiner beschworen Gott um Beistand – und der schickte einen Blitz hinab und spaltete einen großen Stein, der fortan die Grenzmark bilden sollte. Der «Gspaltna Stee» ist heute noch zu besichtigen. Über die Grenzverläufe gestritten hat man sich aber trotz des sagenhaften Urteils noch über Jahrhunderte: So weigerten sich die Engadiner noch 1655, für ihre Alpweiden auf Vermunt Grundsteuern an die österreichische Herrschaft Bludenz zu entrichten und anerkannten damit auch die spätestens seit 1423 existierende territorialrechtliche Oberhoheit der Habsburger über das Vermunt noch nicht an. Dass die Ardezer übrigens nicht nur der Sage nach bis nach Partenen vorgedrungen sind, das zeigt heute noch die Gutsbezeichnung «Stainsberg» am Rand von Partenen an. Auf Deutsch benannten sich die rätoromanisch-sprachigen Ardezer nicht ohne Stolz nach der Burg in ihrem Dorf, Steinsberg eben.
