Mit dem Bau des 240 m langen Eisenbahnviadukts über das sumpfige Schwarzwasser beginnt für Demitz-Thumitz 1845 die Geschichte der Granitgewinnung.

Die einsetzende Nachfrage nach Straßenpflaster sorgte Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts für ein enormes Wachstum der Granitindustrie. Viele Erfindungen in Bezug auf die Gewinnung und Verarbeitung des Natursteins Granit haben ihren Ausgangspunkt in Demitz-Thumitz. Als authentisches Steinbrecherdorf ist Demitz-Thumitz noch heute Zeugnis für den ältesten und größten Granitabbau in Sachsen.

Im Jahr 2009 beteiligte sich die Gemeinde am Wettbewerb des LfULG "Sachsens Themendörfer" und wurde mit dem ersten Preis „Demitz-Thumitz - Das Granitdorf" ausgezeichnet.
